The GRE General Test is structured into three main sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. The Verbal Reasoning section measures the ability to analyze and draw conclusions from discourse, reason from incomplete data, understand multiple levels of meaning, and summarize text, using question types such as Reading Comprehension, Text Completion, and Sentence Equivalence. The Quantitative Reasoning section assesses problem-solving skills using basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis, with question formats including Quantitative Comparison, Multiple-choice (select one answer), and Multiple-choice (select one or more answers), as well as Numeric Entry. The Analytical Writing section evaluates critical thinking and analytical writing abilities, comprising two separately timed tasks: 'Analyze an Issue' (presenting a position on a general interest topic) and 'Analyze an Argument' (critiquing someone else's argument). Scoring for Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning ranges from 130 to 170 in 1-point increments, while Analytical Writing scores range from 0 to 6 in half-point increments. The GRE General Test is section-level adaptive, meaning the computer selects the second section of a measure (Verbal or Quantitative) based on the test-taker's performance on the first section of that measure. The test takes approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete, including breaks. It is offered year-round at Prometric test centers globally, with a paper-delivered option available in certain regions where computer-based testing is not feasible. Scores are valid for five years after the test date. Test-takers also have access to the ScoreSelect® option, which allows them to choose which set of scores (from which test dates) they wish to send to prospective institutions, enhancing their control over the application process.
