The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a comprehensive standardized test predominantly used to evaluate the qualifications of applicants seeking admission to master's, doctoral, and MBA programs. Its primary purpose is to provide graduate and business school admissions committees with a common measure to compare the academic aptitude of candidates from varied educational backgrounds and institutions worldwide. The test is designed to assess skills developed over a long period, not specific subject knowledge acquired from a particular undergraduate course of study, making it a general indicator of readiness for rigorous graduate-level work. The GRE General Test, the most commonly taken version, comprises three main sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. The Verbal Reasoning section measures a test-taker's ability to analyze and evaluate written material, synthesize information from it, understand relationships between concepts, and comprehend nuances of meaning. The Quantitative Reasoning section assesses problem-solving skills, including basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. The Analytical Writing section measures critical thinking and analytical writing abilities, requiring test-takers to articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively, support ideas with relevant reasons and examples, and sustain a well-focused, coherent discussion. Scoring for the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections ranges from 130 to 170, in one-point increments, while the Analytical Writing section is scored from 0 to 6 in half-point increments. Both Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections are section-level adaptive, meaning the difficulty of the second section for each content area adjusts based on the test-taker's performance in the first section of that area. The total test administration typically takes about three hours and forty-five minutes, not including breaks. Administered predominantly via computer at test centers around the world, ETS also offers an at-home option for the GRE General Test. In addition to the General Test, GRE also offers Subject Tests in specific disciplines such as Physics, Psychology, and Mathematics. These Subject Tests are intended to measure undergraduate-level achievement in particular fields of study and are typically required by a smaller number of highly specialized graduate programs. While the GRE has been a fixture in graduate admissions since its introduction in 1937 and underwent significant revisions in 2011 to better reflect skills needed for graduate school, its role has seen some evolution, with certain programs moving towards making it optional or waiving it entirely, though it remains a critical requirement for a vast number of institutions globally.
