Founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo in January 1994 (and incorporated in March 1995) as "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web," the company quickly rebranded to Yahoo! (an acronym for "Yet Another Hierarchically Organized Oracle"). Initially, it served as a hand-compiled directory of websites, distinguishing itself from early search engines by its curated approach. Yahoo's user-friendly interface and comprehensive listings made it an indispensable tool for navigating the nascent internet, leading to rapid expansion and an iconic status during the dot-com boom. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, Yahoo had diversified its offerings significantly. It introduced services such as Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo News, Yahoo Finance, and a popular search engine, transforming from a simple directory into a full-fledged web portal. Its brand became synonymous with the internet for many users, and it emerged as a major player in online advertising and content delivery. The company made several key acquisitions, including GeoCities and Broadcast.com, further expanding its reach into various internet verticals. The mid-2000s, however, saw Yahoo struggle to adapt to new internet trends, particularly the rise of Google's superior search technology and Facebook's dominance in social networking. Despite numerous attempts at innovation and several changes in leadership, Yahoo gradually lost market share and struggled with consistent strategy. Significant challenges included declining advertising revenue, failed acquisition attempts (notably by Microsoft), and major data breaches that further eroded user trust and brand value. In 2017, Verizon acquired Yahoo's core internet assets (including Yahoo Mail, Yahoo News, and Yahoo Finance) for approximately $4.48 billion, integrating them into its Oath subsidiary (later Verizon Media). The remaining parts of the original Yahoo were rebranded as Altaba, which operated as an investment company holding shares in Alibaba and Yahoo Japan, eventually liquidating its assets. Today, the Yahoo brand continues to operate under new ownership, now part of Apollo Global Management's Yahoo Inc. portfolio, focusing on its established suite of content and communication services and striving for relevance in a highly competitive digital landscape, particularly in areas like finance, news, and sports.
