Visa's origins trace back to 1958 when Bank of America launched its BankAmericard program. It evolved into an independent entity in 1970 as National BankAmericard Inc. and was rebranded as Visa in 1976. Unlike traditional banks, Visa operates as a payment technology company. Its core business involves providing the technological infrastructure and the globally recognized brand that enables financial institutions (issuers and acquirers) to offer Visa-branded payment products. This means Visa itself does not issue cards, extend credit, or collect consumer debt. Instead, it licenses its brand and technology to thousands of financial institutions worldwide, which then issue the cards and manage customer relationships. The Visa network, known as VisaNet, is a sophisticated global processing system capable of handling tens of thousands of transactions per second. When a consumer uses a Visa card, VisaNet facilitates the communication between the merchant's bank (acquirer) and the cardholder's bank (issuer) to authorize, clear, and settle the transaction. This seamless process enables secure and efficient electronic payments across diverse geographical locations and currencies. Visa's technology also incorporates advanced security features, including encryption, tokenization, and fraud detection systems, to protect cardholder data and prevent unauthorized transactions. Visa's product portfolio extends beyond traditional credit cards to include debit cards, prepaid cards, and commercial cards, each designed to meet different consumer and business needs. Visa debit cards draw directly from a bank account, while prepaid cards are loaded with funds in advance. Commercial cards cater to business expenses and travel. Visa's brand is one of the most recognized globally, accepted at millions of merchant locations and ATMs in over 200 countries and territories. Its extensive global acceptance and diverse product offerings have made it a dominant player in the electronic payments industry, significantly contributing to the shift from cash and checks to digital transactions worldwide.
