The SAT, originally introduced in 1926, has undergone numerous revisions and name changes over its history, evolving from a measure of innate aptitude to an assessment of skills acquired through high school coursework. Its primary purpose is to provide a common, standardized measure for colleges to evaluate and compare applicants, complementing high school grades, essays, and recommendations. Historically, the test was paper-based and included various sections like Critical Reading, Writing, and Mathematics, with an optional essay component. A significant transformation occurred with the introduction of the Digital SAT, which began international implementation in March 2023 and U.S. implementation in March 2024. **Current Structure (Digital SAT):** * **Format:** Administered digitally on laptops or tablets via a secure browser. It is an adaptive test, meaning the difficulty of the second module in each section adjusts based on a student's performance in the first module. * **Duration:** Approximately 2 hours and 14 minutes, significantly shorter than the paper-based version. * **Sections:** The test is divided into two main sections: * **Reading and Writing:** Combines questions assessing comprehension, analysis, rhetoric, and standard English conventions. This section is modular adaptive. * **Math:** Covers Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. A calculator is permitted for all math questions, and this section is also modular adaptive. * **Scoring:** Scores range from 400 to 1600, with each of the two main sections (Reading and Writing, and Math) scored on a scale of 200-800. There is no longer an optional essay. **Administration:** The SAT is offered multiple times throughout the year at designated test centers worldwide. **Role in Admissions:** While historically a cornerstone of college admissions, the SAT's mandatory status has diminished in recent years due to the widespread adoption of 'test-optional' policies by many universities.
