Palestinians constitute an indigenous population whose ancestry traces back to the ancient inhabitants of the Levant, significantly Arabized over centuries following the Muslim conquest in the 7th century. Today, they are primarily concentrated in the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, within the State of Israel (where they are often referred to as Arab citizens of Israel), and across a vast diaspora. This diaspora includes large communities in neighboring Arab countries such as Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon, as well as significant populations in North and South America, and Europe. The modern Palestinian identity began to coalesce more distinctly under Ottoman rule, solidifying further during the British Mandate for Palestine (1920–1948). The pivotal events of the 20th century, particularly the 1948 Arab-Israeli War (known to Palestinians as the Nakba, or 'catastrophe'), which led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands, and the 1967 Six-Day War, which brought the West Bank and Gaza Strip under Israeli occupation, profoundly shaped their collective experience and reinforced their shared identity. These events resulted in the creation of a vast refugee population and fueled the ongoing national movement for self-determination. Palestinian culture is vibrant and diverse, deeply interwoven with broader Arab culture while maintaining distinctive characteristics. Arabic is their primary language, with various regional dialects. While the majority adhere to Sunni Islam, there is a significant and historically prominent Christian minority, as well as smaller communities of Druze, Samaritans, and others. Cultural expressions include traditional music (like 'oud and dabke dancing), elaborate embroidery (tatreez), rich culinary traditions, and a robust literary and artistic scene that often explores themes of identity, displacement, and resistance. Their strong oral tradition also plays a vital role in preserving their history and heritage. Politically, Palestinians have pursued self-determination through various movements, notably the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) since its formation in 1964, which is internationally recognized as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. The Palestinian Authority (PA), established following the Oslo Accords in the 1990s, exercises limited self-governance in parts of the West Bank. The aspiration for an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel, with East Jerusalem as its capital, remains a central objective, though the path to achieving this is fraught with complex political, territorial, and security challenges, further complicated by internal political divisions. Despite the challenges of occupation, statelessness, and dispersion, Palestinians exhibit remarkable resilience in preserving their identity. The diaspora plays a crucial role in maintaining cultural traditions, advocating for Palestinian rights, and contributing economically and intellectually to both their host countries and the Palestinian national cause. Their experience of displacement and resistance has fostered a strong sense of collective memory and a determination to pass on their heritage to future generations, ensuring the continuity of Palestinian identity across geographical boundaries.
