Moon

The Moon is a geologically complex body with a diameter of 3,474 kilometers, making it approximately one-quarter the diameter of Earth. Its mass is about 1/81st that of Earth, resulting in a surface gravity roughly one-sixth that of Earth. It lacks a substantial atmosphere, possessing only a tenuous exosphere composed primarily of helium, neon, and argon, which offers no protection from solar radiation or meteoroid impacts, leading to extreme surface temperature variations ranging from -173 °C during the lunar night to 127 °C in direct sunlight. Internally, the Moon is thought to have a small, partially molten core, a solid inner core, a fluid outer core, a substantial mantle, and a crust averaging 50-60 km thick on the far side and 30-40 km thick on the near side. Its surface features are dominated by two main types of terrain: the heavily cratered, lighter-colored highlands (terrae), which are older crustal material, and the darker, relatively smoother maria (Latin for 'seas'), which are vast plains of solidified basaltic lava that erupted between 3.8 and 3.1 billion years ago following major impact events. Craters, ranging from microscopic pits to basin-sized structures hundreds of kilometers across (e.g., Tycho, Copernicus), are ubiquitous and are primarily the result of asteroid and comet impacts over billions of years. The entire surface is covered by regolith, a layer of pulverized rock and dust formed by continuous impacts. Orbitally, the Moon completes one revolution around Earth in approximately 27.3 Earth days (sidereal period) and undergoes synchronous rotation, meaning its rotational period is equal to its orbital period, which is why the same face of the Moon is always presented to Earth. The slightly longer synodic period of 29.5 days dictates the lunar phases (new moon, crescent, quarter, gibbous, full moon) and the timing of eclipses. The Moon's gravitational pull is the primary cause of Earth's ocean tides and also helps stabilize Earth's axial tilt, which prevents drastic climate swings. The Moon is gradually receding from Earth at a rate of about 3.8 centimeters per year. The leading theory for the Moon's formation is the Giant Impact Hypothesis, which posits that a Mars-sized body named Theia collided with the early Earth, ejecting a vast amount of material into orbit that subsequently coalesced to form the Moon. Early in its history, the Moon is believed to have been largely molten, forming a global 'magma ocean' that solidified to form its crust. Subsequent periods of heavy bombardment and volcanic activity shaped its current surface. Water ice has been detected in permanently shadowed craters near the lunar poles, offering potential resources for future human missions. Beyond its scientific importance as a natural laboratory for planetary geology and the study of early solar system conditions, the Moon holds immense cultural significance across human civilizations. It was the target of the Apollo program, which landed twelve astronauts on its surface between 1969 and 1972, and is the focus of renewed international interest for future robotic and human exploration, including the Artemis program, with goals to establish a sustained human presence.
