Green Party

The term 'Green Party' refers collectively to political parties whose core ideology centers on environmentalism and ecological sustainability, typically integrated with commitments to social justice, grassroots democracy, and nonviolence. Although each national party operates independently within its respective political system, Green Parties generally share foundational principles such as climate action, biodiversity protection, renewable energy transition, civil liberties, and inclusive governance. The modern Green political movement originated in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly in Western Europe, where environmental activism, anti-nuclear campaigns, and peace movements coalesced into formal political organizations. One of the earliest and most influential examples was the formation of the German Green Party, which entered the federal parliament in 1983 and helped institutionalize ecological politics within mainstream democratic processes. Over time, Green Parties have gained representation in national legislatures, regional governments, and supranational bodies, influencing environmental legislation and sustainability policy. Green Parties are often characterized by decentralized internal structures, member participation in policy formation, and an emphasis on transparency and accountability. Economically, many advocate models that integrate environmental limits with social welfare, sometimes described as ecological economics or sustainable development frameworks. Internationally, numerous Green Parties cooperate through federations and networks to coordinate positions on global issues such as climate change, human rights, and sustainable development. Despite shared ideological foundations, Green Parties differ in strategic orientation, coalition participation, and electoral success depending on national political contexts. In some countries they function as junior coalition partners influencing policy from within government; in others they remain smaller opposition parties or activist movements.
