Brazil's geographical expanse is remarkable, featuring the world's largest rainforest, the Amazon, which is crucial for global biodiversity and climate regulation. Other prominent biomes include the Pantanal wetlands, the Cerrado savannas, and the Atlantic Forest. Its climate varies from tropical in the north to temperate in the south. Historically, Brazil was inhabited by numerous indigenous peoples before the arrival of Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500. It remained a Portuguese colony for over three centuries, during which sugar cane cultivation and extensive use of African slave labor shaped its demographic and economic structure. In 1822, Brazil declared independence, initially forming an empire and later becoming a republic in 1889. The 20th century saw periods of both democratic rule and military dictatorships, eventually leading to the establishment of its current democratic system in the late 1980s. The country's culture is vibrant and globally influential, particularly known for its music (samba, bossa nova), dance (Carnival), and sports (futebol/soccer). Brazilian society is characterized by its significant ethnic diversity, a result of centuries of intermarriage between Indigenous peoples, European settlers, and African enslaved individuals, alongside waves of immigration from various parts of the world. Portuguese is the official language, and Catholicism remains the predominant religion, though Protestantism has seen substantial growth. Economically, Brazil possesses abundant natural resources, making it a leading global producer and exporter of agricultural products like soybeans, coffee, beef, and sugar, as well as minerals such as iron ore. Its industrial base is diverse, including sectors like automotive, aerospace, and petrochemicals. The service sector also plays a vital role. Brazil is a member of major international economic blocs, including BRICS and Mercosur. However, it continues to grapple with issues such as income disparity, infrastructure deficits, and environmental degradation, particularly deforestation in the Amazon. Politically, Brazil operates as a federative presidential republic with a multi-party system. The government is divided into executive, legislative, and judicial branches, with 26 states and one Federal District. Brazil plays an active role in international affairs, participating in organizations like the United Nations, the G20, and various regional forums, contributing to discussions on global trade, climate change, and human rights.
